This is a quick “how to” post if you experience the above error when installing a legitimate copy of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007.
I spent some time scanning various forums to try to understand this problem better and a common thread emerged:
Uninstall Skype.
So, I did this (I had Skype 2.5) and Office installed without any errors. I then re-installed a later version of Skype and all was well.
Not sure why they interfere but it appears to have something to do with ports. Hope this solves your problem – add a comment to say thanks if it does
Thanks bud, that’s ace. Helped me millions.
i dont have skype…..
so what may be the prob??
I have no skype installed!
ad & mostafa: a lot of people refer to Skype as the problem – but the root cause is that Skype opens and listens to ports 443 (HTTPS) & 80 (HTTP). Uninstalling Skype removes this wrapper and the Office install works as it is able to access these ports without any conflict.
It is possible you have another IM client/software on your machine that uses these ports like Skype and this is causing the same interference. Try checking which software you have that is using these two ports and try either disabling its use of them, or uninstall it temporarily (if possible). See below for link.
Here is the explanation for how Skype affects the ports: http://is.gd/XxR2. You can check which applications on your PC use these ports using this guide: http://is.gd/Xy6Z. Hope that helps and you manage to track down the interference.
Just fixed (basically) this on a support call, but with different files “not found”:
If you had a previous version of Office installed at any point on this machine there’s a possibility the registry wasn’t cleaned when you got rid of it. Installer will be referencing outdated information (version numbers, file locations) until the corrupt registry keys are removed.
hklm > software > microsoft > office, cleaned up both the 12 keys and the downloads keys further under delivery > source engine > downloads.
“uninstall skype” is an easier answer if it works though.
Thanks for the more detailed update!
thanks,
everything here about ports worked fine and the msg of setup cant…… dwtrig20 stopped appearing. However, it now tells me setup cannot find Office,en-us\DW20.exe
do u know how to solve this issue ?
Hi Walid,
Unfortunately I do not know about the DW20.exe issue as I haven’t seen this before. I would recommend searching the web to see if you can find something on that issue. If you do, feel free to post back here in case other people come across the same problem – thanks!
I m to facing the same problem of walid “setup cannot find Office,en-us\DWtrig20.exe” in office 2007
plz help me with this problem
Have you looked at th’s comment – this might help you if the Skype fix isn’t appropriate?
heyy..if u encounter this problem then just go the folder and open the file whichever ur setup cannot find and then retry.for example if ur setup cannot find dwtrig20.exe, find it in the setup folder and open it..then try installing it again.in most cases, the setup will not b able to find 2 files. open the two files whenever the setup cannot find them and then install.
this will surely work
Thanks for the more efforts u did
i d’have any skype and other antivirus and my firewell off thn why is’t installed on my p.c.
pawan: Have a look back at the earlier comments (June 10 & July 15) as they may help you to find a solution. Good luck!
the most helpful topic i ever needed,
thanks too much
Sure worked for me!
A very helpful topic for many Office 2007 users!
When the setup hangs and asks for the path to “Office.en-us\OfficeMUI.msi” or whatever other folder or file it does not find but still should, you should not select the “Office.en-us” folder but its PARENT folder (the one containing the folder the setup asks for). Spent hours to figure it out.
none of the above worked in my case…un installed skype…cleaned the registry trying clicking the 2 files ( DW20, dwtrig20.exe )…searched for listening port..there is one left n i cant stop it…its a system service i tried disabling it n stopping it but i keeps on coming back up…so please let me know if there is a way to bypass this situation
i m also facing same problem as tahmaseeb ! tried all chances..but non of them worked!!
Hi pratik – Have you tried the physical registry steps in th’s comment (link here)? I have cut-and-paste them here for reference.
Installer will be referencing outdated information (version numbers, file locations) until the corrupt registry keys are removed.
hklm > software > microsoft > office, cleaned up both the 12 keys and the downloads keys further under delivery > source engine > downloads.
I am also facing the same problem
Whenever I try to install MS Office 2007 Enterprise
Following msg is shown
“Setup cannot find office.en-us\dwtrig20.exe”
But Guys! I am not understanding your talk, can u plz describe the solution in easy way, step by step. so that i can understand this.
Can u help me EDWARD!
Hi Saurabh,
There are three options you can try – these are as follows.
[1] Are you using Skype?
If you are, remove it completely, install Office and then install Skype again. This usually fixes the problem.
[2A] Open the parent folder manually that the installer cannot find.
When you get the error, use Windows Explorer to find the parent folder of the folder that contains the missing file. Run the Office install again. Repeat this step if you get any more files not found. Leave them open in separate Windows Explorer windows until Office is installed.
[2B] Open the files manually that the installer cannot find.
When you get the error, use Windows Explorer to find the file and open it manually. Leave it open and run the Office install again. Repeat this step if you get any more files not found. Leave them open until Office is installed.
[3] Edit the registry.
This is the last option and care should be taken not to break your machine. I take no responsibility for any changes you make to your computer (either in this step or the previous ones). To edit the registry click on START, then RUN … In the box that appears type REGEDIT and click OK. Browse down the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > OFFICE
Delete the keys (items) you find in the OFFICE folder but not the sub-folders. This removes traces of previous installs to avoid possible conflicts when installing the new version of Office.
Then browse into:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > OFFICE > DELIVERY > SOURCEENGINE > DOWNLOADS
Delete the keys (items) you find here. This is my understanding from TH’s Comment last July (not something I have tried because the Skype fix worked for me).
If you are in any doubt, you can contact Microsoft who will guide you through the resolution as they did for TH last year.
Good luck!
Hey Edward,
I happened to read this entire page and tried it all i’m still not able to find the solution.. i tried the 3rd step HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > OFFICE > DELIVERY > SOURCEENGINE > DOWNLOADS
i could not find DELIVERY > SOURCEENGINE > DOWNLOADS
i tried searchin for a solution but all i could find was uninstall skype which i have’nt installed at all!!
please reply with a solution!! will be of good help:)
thanks in advance:)
Hi -
I was lucky in that the Skype option worked for me. The other solutions were pulled from other people who commented on this post. One of them took the details from a support call to Microsoft, so maybe you could give them a call?

Here’s what worked for me:
Instead of manually going through the registry, I downloaded “Clean My Registry” and had it fix any errors.
This solved the first error, but I found I had more. To fix these, I also had to disable Carbonite.
Hope this helps!

plz help me with this problem
Hi Rashed, Mukesh & Joseph.
Lindsay (previous comment) has an interesting idea – clean out your registry using the tool suggested. I don’t guarantee this will work, but it’s another possible solution to try to the others listed in these comments.

Hey guys,
Took an hour to figure it out but for some reason you can’t install from the desktop. The solution is to copy the entire Office folder to My Computer – Administrator’s Documents.
After it is copied simply run the setup file from that location. IMPORTANT: REPEAT….Must run setup from the Administrator’s Documents location in “My Computer.”
I hope this works.
Hi Edaward,
I’m trying to ownload MSoffice 2007, geting an error that dwtrig20.exe file can not be used, could you please help to rectify this error.
OK. I just delete the item HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > OFFICE > DELIVERY > SOURCEENGINE > DOWNLOADS and it works now.
Jah cracked it on March 23, 2010 at 19:24!

It worked for me yiiipii !!
If you’ve installed Windows Vista or 7 on a computer without formatting and it use to have an operating system with Office installed, the folder called ‘MSOCache’ might exist on the C: drive still. You’ll need to rename it to MSOCache1 or something different.
Greetings,
bad luck, having exactly the same prob, installing Office 2010 over an older Office 2010 (pre-RTM)
Got exactly the same annoying chosers missing various files from \Office.en-us.
I tried all these tricks uninstall completely Skype (didnot help), turnoff my firewall (Comodo) – not helped, open the missing fies from Office.en-us – not helped, deleting particular registry keys – not helped
Please help somebody
