Some time ago we began to allow people to change their telecoms provider but keep the same telephone number (fixed land line).
Along came mobile phones and the same principle followed – we could change our network and keep our same cell phone number (subject to certain physical handset license restrictions notwithstanding).
However, the VoIP market is still firmly entrenched and you cannot change your VoIP provider AND keep the same number. With the release of the first of many VoIP applications for the iPhone (now that Apple have changed its decision over VoIP use of the iPhone) and the wide variance of tariffs from different VoIP providers, it would be great to be able to switch to a new provider and carry the same VoIP number with you – especially since my VoIP numbers are business numbers.
However, this is not the case currently (in the UK) and it would be great if it could be made to happen sometime soon. I would love an app on my iPhone that allowed me to use my VoIP numbers instead of having to rely on an installed (and often flaky) VoIP application on the PC. So come on operators – find a way to allow us to port our VoIP numbers!
I would only then need one handset to communicate with – one handset to rule them all
