ad & mostafa: a lot of people refer to Skype as the problem - but the root cause is that Skype opens and listens to ports 443 (HTTPS) & 80 (HTTP). Uninstalling Skype removes this wrapper and the Office install works as it is able to access these ports without any conflict.

It is possible you have another IM client/software on your machine that uses these ports like Skype and this is causing the same interference. Try checking which software you have that is using these two ports and try either disabling its use of them, or uninstall it temporarily (if possible). See below for link.

Here is the explanation for how Skype affects the ports: http://is.gd/XxR2. You can check which applications on your PC use these ports using this guide: http://is.gd/Xy6Z. Hope that helps and you manage to track down the interference.

Comment on Conflict Resolution: Syncplicity vs Live Mesh by Edward

Update: I now have over 18,000 files in my Holding Area despite having completely re-synchronised my entire set of folders.

There have been some improvements in the Live Mesh management of conflicts, but only insofar as allowing you to "perform this action on all of these conflicts" (in batches of 50) - which makes things only slightly less tedious for large conflict sets.

I have experienced a new conflict issue where I get the screen "the following conflict has occurred" but I am presented with a completely blank option - ie no files or folders are listed and there are no action buttons apart from "next". This means I end up with a slowly growing list of conflicts that I can never clear as there is no option that allows me to clear them. I have resorted to deleting the folder from the Live Desktop and then re-synching the files again. Not ideal as it is a very inelegant solution, but there seems to be no other work-around.

And, Microsoft, it would be great if - one day - I could safely remove the growing number of 18000+ files in the Holding Area as they are taking up more and more disk space.

Generally, Live Mesh is still holding up and doing a good job of synchronising files and folders, both with the Live Desktop and also peer to peer, but there are a couple of niggles mentioned here which would be great if addressed soon.

Thanks! I was tearing my hair out, having done it once and not remembering how I did it when I needed to do it again.

Not very intuitive!
